The Corral Drive-In
San Saba,TX

Introduction

Saturday afternoon, I drove up from San Antonio to visit the re-opened Corral Drive-In theater in San Saba, Texas.

It's located just south of town on Highway 16. I arrived early, took some pictures and then went on into town for dinner. After a very large chicken fried steak, I returned to the Corral. The gate was open when I arrived. There is a sign in the ticket booth window advising patrons that tickets are also available at the concession stand. I drove inside, parked my car and then went in to pay for my ticket. I thought $4 was very reasonable for two first run movies -- "Little Black Book" and "Collateral ". Concession prices are comparable to the Crossroads drive-in in Shiner, TX. If you haven't been there, that means reasonable prices.

Also like the Crossroads, the screen is parallel to the highway. Traffic on this part of Highway 16 is nearly non-existent and I never found myself distracted by passing cars.

The projection quality was excellent. The picture was extremely bright and well focused. Their FM signal was strong (it should have been, I was less than 20 feet from the antenna) and clear. There was a slight buzz in one of the sound channels but that may have been my equipment. Either it went away, or I became numb to it, fifteen minutes into the movie.

I counted 18 vehicles in the lot. I was probably the only person there solo. I have no idea if this was a typical night for the Corral. There was rain in the area and lightning to the northeast. After driving around in San Saba for a half hour, I can tell you the Corral shouldn't have much competition for the local entertainment dollar!

I wish them well and I hope to return there next year.
