7 July 2003 - Terry Moore

On the night of 5 July, I drove out to the Crossroads drive-in in Shiner, Texas. "Finding Nemo" was the feature for the evening. Although Mr Rodman was expecting a low turnout (he remarked several times that the 4th of July weekend was always bad for the Crossroads), a fairly large number of people attended the showing. There was even a fireworks display during the intermission! I've never seen that before at a drive-in! I had a great time. If you are looking for the brightest drive-in picture in Texas, visit the Crossroads!

*****

Unlike my last visit to the Crossroads, I arrived early enough to take a few pictures. During 2002, a sheet metal fence was erected from the entrance on the left side of the property all the way around the front side of the property along Highway 90.

One of the most appealing aspects of the Crossroads for me is its rural location. It combines "cinema under the stars" with a "back to nature" quality that you just can't find at any urban cinema.

Sadly, the new fence reduces that appeal. Yes, I find myself feeling just a little bit "fenced in" at the Crossroads! Still I understand the necessity of the fence. Several buildings have been built on the other side of Highway 90, almost directly behind the screen. The volume of traffic on Highway 90 also seems to be higher now that it was in 2001. Let's face it. Headlights and security lights don't improve the drive-in experience!

The table below contains a selection of photographs from 2001 and 2003. While the images weren't captured at exactly the same angle or under the same lighting conditions, they should give you an idea of how the fence has changed the Crossroads!

Twice in one year!

Yes, I was again found time to visit the Crossroads Drive-In! The feature presentation was 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl".

Although I had previously seen this film in a hard top theater, I found it to be much more enjoyable when seen under the stars!

Although it had recently rained, the film was well attended. I visited with Steve Rodman for about 15 minutes or so. He remains the friendliest drive-in owner that I've met here in Texas! He even revealed his future plans to build a new ticket booth.
