Fredericksburg Drive In was first known as the "Drive In". It opened on 23 Oct 1940 and was the first drive in for San Antonio. The name was changed to the Fredericksburg Drive In when the Alamo Drive In opened in April 1946.
This is the first known ad for the Fredricksburg Drive In, announcing the
Grand Opening to be coming the next evening.
This
is the ad that ran on opening night.
This article ran the in the San Antonio Light on the day of the Grand Opening.
This article is a reporter's wonderful review of the first night at the "Drive
In" in San Antonio. I was pleased the learn about the latest innovation in
sound systems. Apparently the in-ground speaker system performed at less than the
expected performance levels since they were later replaced with the pole style speaker
system.
These are early pictures of the fredricksburg drive-in found at the Institute of Texas Culture.
Note the
dark spots on the ground in this picture. Those are the inground speakers that the
cars parked over top of..
This
is from the same photo and is a blow up of the projection booth area.
Again,
same picture with blow up of the screen tower.
Here are some later photos taken. They seem to be from around the mid to late 1960s.
By now the theater name had been changed from "The
Drive-In" to the "Fredricksburg Road Drive-In Theater".
Here is a blow
up from the same photo showing the screen tower. Also note how much the screen size
has been increased from its original size.
In this
picture is becomes very clear the theater was now owned by Stanley Warner Theaters. And
judging from the mobile home there seems to have been a live-in property manger.
The highlighted area in this picture is the area where the theater once resided.
