Alamo Drive-In, Previously listed as (428 Austin Highway, 1948-1972:)

To avoid the end-of-work traffic, we took the "roads less traveled" and worked our way over to Austin Highway.  Based on the Internet research, the Alamo Drive-In would be underneath an expensive gated community which fronts on New Braunfels and Austin Highway.  I take issue with this and believe the actual site was further up Austin Highway.  When I pointed out this site to Rick, he commented that the street address was 1428 Austin Highway.  We were running late so we did not stop to investigate further.

Yep, I think we need some more info on this one.  I suspect the open field at 1428 Austin Highway is the correct location.   428 Austin Highway just doesn't look feasible. We will do further research to track down the exact address.

1400 blk of Austin Hwy. - was a flea market until about 4/99. Some of the support poles from the marquee and the concession stand foundation
was still there in 5/99. Had a chain link fence around the front too.

Update: The Alamo Drive-In opened 4 April 1946.  And was listed as 1 mile out on Austin Highway. SA_NEWS_04_APR_1946_GO.jpg (212787 bytes) This ad was taken from the San Antonio Express News Dated 4 April 1946.  That makes this the second drive in to open in San Antonio.  The opening of the Alamo prompted the "Drive In" to change it's name to the "Fredericksburg Drive In".

We would really like to find some pictures of the Alamo in its prime but for now all we have are these photos of the empty lot where it once resided.

UPDATE:
The entire area from the Seven Oaks Hotel up to Harry Wurzbach is soon to become the site of a large commercial property development. On 13 Apr 2002, the following GPS coordinates were captured to document the sites. These coordinages were taken 2 feet due north of the street number sign scene above. The coordinates are 29 degrees, 29.515 minutes north and 98 degrees, 26.232 minutes west.
